What is schools of choice?

Schools of choice is an opportunity for out-of-district students to attend Pewamo-Westphalia Community Schools. The application process and regulations are set forth by the Michigan Department of Education. 

Can anyone apply?

Students who reside in other local school districts within Clinton County and those who reside in local school districts located in contiguous intermediate school districts are eligible to apply to Pewamo-Westphalia Community Schools through the schools of choice application process.

What is the process?

Out-of-district students must submit an application for schools of choice during the application period.  

When is the application period?

The application for new schools of choice students for the 2024-25 school year is April 24, 2024 - May 30, 2024. Ending at 4 pm. 

How many spots are open for the 2024-25 school year? 

Pewamo-Westphalia Community Schools has the following spots open for the 2024-25 school year. Begindergarten 10, Kindergarten 10, First 8, Second 8, Third 3, Fourth 0, Fifth 0, Sixth 3, Seventh 5, Eighth 0, Ninth 2, Tenth 5, Eleventh 0, Twelve 0. P-W Schools will hold a drawing if more applications are received than the number of spots available per grade. 

Applicants who reside with a student who attended P-W Schools as a school of choice student during the 2023-24 school year will be given enrollment preference. P-W will also have a wait list for any applicants who are not accepted.

When do we find out if our out-of-district student can attend Pewamo Westphalia Community Schools?

Families will be notified about the status of their application after the application period ends. 

Where do I begin?

Applications for schools of choice will be available on this website page on the first day of the application period.  You can also request an application to be mailed to you by calling the district at 989 587-5100. Applications may only be accepted from April 24, 2024, to May 30, 2024.  Applications must be received by 4:00 pm on May 30, 2024.

What kind of information do we need to complete the application?

The application asks for basic information on the student, i.e., name, address, date of birth, entering grade level, school district of residence, school last attended, parent contact information, disciplinary history, special education services receiving, and parent/guardian signature.

Who provides transportation? 

Schools of choice students/families are responsible for their own transportation to and from school. 

Once approved as a schools of choice student, do we need to complete this process every year?

Once a child has been enrolled as a schools of choice student, the child may remain a P-W schools student as long as they are continuously enrolled in P-W Schools.
